Registration bursaries

The European Association for Urban History has a limited number of bursaries for postgraduate doctoral and postdoctoral students without paid posts under 35 years (on 3rd September 2014). The bursaries cover the full registration costs of students whose papers have been accepted for sessions, but all other costs (e.g. travel, accommodation) must be paid by the applicant. For a limited number of Travel Bursaries, see below under Travel Bursaries.

Procedure for applications:
Download the file below and complete the application form. Send the form – together with a copy of the letter of acceptance from the session organiser and a letter of support from your supervisor – to Marjaana Niemi.

Applications should be in English or French and sent by post or by email (scanned) to the address below. Please ensure you give your current email address.

Competition in recent years for bursaries has been heavy. Please apply early. The first closing date for applications is 28th February 2014. The main allocation of bursaries will be made in March 2014. Funding permitting, there will be a second allocation of a smaller number of grants at the end of May. For this round the closing date is 12th May 2014. Please ensure all your papers are submitted to arrive by the first or second deadline, otherwise your application will be excluded.

Travel bursaries

The Association will award for the Lisbon conference up to 5 Travel Bursaries to cover travel and accommodation costs for the conference to the maximum of 250 euros per grant for postgraduate students from some Eastern and Southern European countries (see eligible countries below). The grant will be paid after the conference by the conference organiser on the presentation of travel and accommodation receipts. Travel bursaries will only be awarded to successful applicants for Registration Bursaries.

Applications must be made with all papers arriving by 28th February 2014. The allocation of awards will be made in March 2014.

Applicants must be natives or permanently resident in one of the following countries: Albania, Baltic states, ex-Jugoslavia states, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey.

Procedure for applications:
Send the same documentation by post or by email as for Registration Bursaries.
PLUS
1. A budget of your expected travel and accommodation costs for the Lisbon conference.
2. A piece of your written work – typed or printed – related to your thesis/current research in English or French. The work should be at least 8 pages long but no more than 20 pages. This must be certified as your work by your supervisor. The work will not be returned.

Czech Association for Urban History Bursaries

The Czech Association for Urban Studies (ČSUS) in close co-operation with The European Association for Urban History (EAUH) will award a limited number of bursaries to support participation at the 12th International Conference of Urban History “Cities in Europe, Cities in the World”, which will take place on 3rd – 6th September 2014 in Lisbon.

Bursary provision is in compliance with objectives of ČSUS, which include the promotion of urban studies in the Czech Republic and cooperation of ČSUS with EAUH. The purpose of the bursaries is to motivate scholars to take part at the conference and to enable their attendance. Eligible for the bursaries are applicants who fulfill the following criteria:

  • The applicant is active participant of the conference, i.e. she or he will present paper that was accepted by the session or round-table organizers, or will co-organize a session.
  • The applicant will attend the conference in person.
  • The priority will be given to students and young scholars who are affiliated to universities in the Czech Republic and have no grants or universities which would be able to pay the costs for them.
  • The citizens of the organizing country are not eligible.
  • The bursaries that are provided by ČSUS cannot be combined with the bursaries granted by International Committee of EAUH. The selected applicants will be provided with either one or both types of the bursaries that will cover:
    - registration fee up to 220 EUR (5500 CZK)
    - air-ticket up to 300 EUR (7500 CZK)

The bursary will be granted retrospectively after the conference against confirmation of attendance and – in case of mobility bursaries – also boarding-pass and receipt/invoice indicating the cost of the air-ticket.

The bursaries will be selected by the ad hoc committee comprising representatives of EAUH International Committee, ČSUS committee, and external experts.

The documents must be written in English and signed. The closing date for the application is 15th February 2014. The allocation of bursaries will be made in March 2014.

IEM Bursary for the EAUH 2014

The Instituto de Estudos Medievais (IEM) of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (UNL) will award a bursary for one postgraduate doctoral student. All PhD candidate or post-doctoral researcher in medieval studies (history, history of the art, archaeology, literature, philosophy…) working at any Portuguese university are welcome to submit an application for this bursary.

The bursary cover the full registration costs of students whose papers have been accepted for sessions, but all other costs (e.g. travel, accommodation) must be paid by the applicant.

In order to apply for the IEM bursary, you must download the file below and complete the application form.

CHAM Bursary for the EAUH 2014

The Centro de História de Além-Mar (CHAM) of the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (FCSH/NOVA) and the Universidade dos Açores (UAc) will award one bursary for a postgraduate doctoral student or a postdoctoral researcher presenting a paper on the subject of port cities in early modern history. All of these participants are welcome to submit an application for this bursary.

The bursary covers the full registration costs (early bird fee) of participants whose papers have been accepted for sessions. All other costs (e.g. travel, accommodation) must be paid by the applicant.

Procedure for applications
Please send the following documents addressed to Alexandra Campos, by email (cham@fcsh.unl.pt), with this subject field ‘EAUH2014 – CHAM bursary application’:
